An overview of the Old Testament
Each Sunday we hear short passages read from the Old Testament at Mass. But where do these readings come from, and how do they fit into Christian narrative as a whole? This course will give an overview of the whole Old Testament, locate the major books in their historical context and genre, look at key texts, and show how the Church reads these ancient Israelite texts as a witness to the coming Messiah Jesus revealed in the New Testament.
“The economy of the Old Testament was deliberately so oriented that it should prepare for and declare in prophecy the coming of Christ, redeemer of all men.” (Vatican II, Dei Verbum, 15)
“The New Testament lies hidden in the Old and the Old is unveiled in the New” (St. Augustine).

A quick dive into the Gospel of St Mark for Year B
Our Gospel readings at Sunday Mass in 2012 are taken (largely) from St Mark. St Mark’s Gospel is so short, it can be read in one sitting! But it is packed with exciting events and insights into the ministry and person of Jesus. This short four-night course is a part of the Lenten program at St Joseph’s Parish, Chelsea. It will give you an overview of the Gospel as well as diving into some deeper points of interest, and give you a starting block for a richer engagement with the Sunday Gospels in the coming year.
Wednesday nights y:30pm to 9:00pm February 29, March 7, 14 and 28, 2012
St Joseph’s Parish, 362 Station Street Chelsea
(Sessions will take place in the parish centre on Argyle Avenue)
